In October 2018, I visited this sand stone quarry in Rajasthan. Beside the quarry was a settlement of women and children; wives of the workers. Some of the wives and mothers were as young as 15. The homes are made of sandstone from the quarries. Living conditions here are tough, with temperatures reaching 53 degrees in the hottest months of the year. Some people here live on only 1 litre water/day. Much of Rajasthan is desert; there hasn’t been rain here for 2 years and 70% of crops have failed. Workers also suffer from Silicosis, cause by inhaling stone dust without proper protective equipment.
